Most of my subject matter is pulled from my experiences out-of-doors, hiking, boating or exploring new destinations. I enjoy the personal connection that results from being active in a setting that I will later paint, and am drawn to places that evoke a strong sense of wonder. For instance, a favorite pastime of mine is to hike the slot canyons of the American Southwest, where the striking interplay of light and shadows on the red rock walls provides both interesting composition as well as a sense of permanence and grandeur, which I attempt to capture. Encountering wildlife in their natural habitats is an intensely rewarding experience that connects me to the painted image. I generally sketch and photograph on-site as a reference for studio painting, and I paint in oils in a figurative style.
