In the summer of 2013, I was fortunate to travel with 18 other students from my college to France. We first began in Paris for ten days and then went for a three week residency in the town of La Napoule--a town along the Mediterranean coast. I know what you are asking--with all the gorgeous ocean landscapes and colors, why paint a sink within a bathroom? I wanted to exploit the ordinary as beautiful. The light and muted colors in this bathroom from my room simply struck me as subtle and overlooked. I therefore felt compelled to paint it and bring importance to such simplicity and ordinary.
It also is metaphoric in the way it shows no reflection of a person as all mirrors would had a person stepped in front of them. Thus the mirror becomes a blank slate for a person to define their own self rather than try to see what they want in their reflection.
